NIHR Participates in an Event on the Sidelines of the GANHRI Meeting in Geneva

Ms. Maria Khouri, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), and Counsellor-at-Law Mr. Yasser Shahin, Assistant Secretary-General of the NIHR, participated in a an event on the sidelines of a meeting on “the Role of National Institutions in promoting Regional Compliance of Executive and Legislative Authorities with the International Human Rights Law”, which was held by the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) in cooperation with the Australian and Portuguese Governments and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva.

 

The event was attended by Mr. Bongani C. Majola, Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission, Ms. Rosalind Croucher, Chairperson of the Australian Human Rights Commission, and Mr. Gianni Magazzeni, Chief of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Branch of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, who stressed the importance that the national institutions follow-up the government’s implementation of the UPR recommendations, which are communicated by the Office of the High Commissioner after the Review process, and determine the themes of the recommendations that are relevant to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals of 2030, based upon the role of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stated in the Resolution No. 141/48, which should be focused on and have a timeline set for their fulfilment, in addition to the importance of partnership and fruitful cooperation between the national institutions and the governments and the provision of parallel reports to the parties of treaties that meet with the national institutions and give them the time to present their interventions to the members of the various committees when considering the reports of the States.

During the event, the participants stressed the role of national institutions, which work in cooperation with the Government and civil society organizations, for the sole purpose of promoting and protecting human rights, providing views and advice and finding out solutions to complaints of human rights violations, as well as the importance of active participation in various meetings, either held by national institutions, governmental or non-governmental international organizations or the governments, aimed at strengthening and building capacities in all areas related to human rights.

During the event, Ms. Maria Khouri explained that the NIHR in Bahrain has established a Committee to follow-up the Government’s implementation of the recommendations of the UPR Working Group, which reflects the NIHR’s important role in following-up the effective implementation of such recommendations by various bodies.  The participants commended the establishment of the Committee, which reflects best practices for the promotion and protection of human rights, being one of the most important roles of national human rights institutions.
